No sharp title for the solo exhibition came to mind, so we announced it with a provisional promotional poster that read “Title Undecided.” There was the curiosity such a phrase would stir, and a co-director of Arting felt that, given how much chance runs through Joo Boram’s way of stacking thin hand-drawn lines, “Title Undecided” could well have worked as the exhibition title.

Joo Boram’s world — focused on the essentials of form, on shapes like the line, the circle, and the triangle, and on color — is one you take to or don’t on instinct, before weighing its meaning, so “Title Undecided” seemed a workable title. I tend to believe contemporary art feels difficult because of the received idea that a serious meaning hides inside the work. Joo Boram, who has independently developed the fundamentals of form rather than meaning or concept, seemed to me deeply connected to art’s nature as intuition beyond language.

Still, since there clearly exists a line of artists who stake everything on first impressions rather than meaning or concept, I judged it better for the title to foreground Joo Boram’s identity. Her singular color sense and her light, rhythmic surfaces went into one bouncing three-syllable word: Saeksaekkkal Jooboram.

Layering slender lines of color into abstract-like fields, or resolving the image into wide-open eyes, a half-set sun, a rainbow-like semicircle — these are the signature icons across Joo Boram’s chronicle of color.

At the entrance of that chronicle stand figurative paintings that clothe people in uncommon color: figures dressed in the wild, primal palette of Gauguin’s Tahiti years, faces assembled from divided planes in the manner of Picasso, up to the trendy portrait of a modern girl in striking fluorescent color — turquoise face, yellow neck — against a red ground.

If one axis of Joo Boram’s world is her sense of color, the other is a composition of layered lines. Her surfaces read like a tree stump revealing its years — like a cross-section of things — and, further, a representation of their essence.

In the end, Joo Boram’s painting is a totality: a narrow picture plane, thread-thin lines, and a keen sense of color, bound together at high density. Her small world of art is made that way.

p.s. The above is my first-instinct reading of the works, summarized in short sentences before I had seen the artist’s notes. An appendix quoting the artist’s notes (marked “ ”) follows.

“Each drawn line felt like a metaphor for a day, or for a moment.”

RE: It chimes with my own image of the layered color lines as tree rings.

“Many of the paintings set a circle on top of a sharp triangle. Unconsciously, they pin down forever on paper the instant of reaching some summit, some climax. The problem comes when you finally reach the top. After the moment of climax, a descent is always waiting. The question is how to endure the way down.”

RE: Above, I read Joo Boram’s aesthetic as a focus on the basics of form — color and shape — over meaning; but the artist answers that her signature icon of a triangle and a circle also carries her own view of the world.
